Hi guys, it's been a good few weeks since my last column, but it's quality not quantity right? Well actually another rant. Hey it's easier to pick faults.
I'm here today to talk about Candice Michelle and her nasty looking injury she suffered on Monday's Raw. For those that don't know Candice climbed the top turnbuckle during her 2 out of 3 falls, women's title match against Beth Phoenix and continued to fall, shoulder and neck planting the mat. The fans gasped and went silent, then the WWE doctor who is in fact a real doctor along with officials brought her round and stretchered her out of the ring.
It was later reported that she had been knocked out, had a concussion and broke her collar bone. Thus leaving her out for a good 6 to 8 weeks. What's ironic is that she took a similar bump in the European tour and face planted the mat. Maybe it was a rehearsed bump gone bad, I don't know, but this brings me to my main point. She shouldn't have been in the ring and was an accident waiting to happen with her experience!
In a so called historical night, where for the first time the womens title was defended in a 2 our of 3 falls match, one of the women could quite possibly have broken her neck. It's a sign. Don't try and put on a great "wrestling" contest with women you openly call "Divas." The word Diva conjures up images of bongo breasted bimbos who strut around at ringside, not amazing athletes that can competently go to the top rope without falling. For the first time ever I'm going to say this. WWE are no TNA, at least in regards to the womens division. There are reasons why WWE's fans chant boring and hit the concession stands during womens matches, whilst TNA fans look in awe and cheer their new champion to tears.
Most of the women wrestlers in TNA have paid heavy dues on the Indy scene and in Japan and are highly respected workers. The Christy Hemme's do their thing and TNA don't pretend she can wrestle. When all these new TNA Knockouts were slaving through bingo halls to accomplish their dreams, Candice Michelle was sucking toes in dirty B movies and only decided to give wrestling a shot when the Diva Search fell in to her lap.
At the start of the year Candice Michelle was our playboy eye candy girl, then all of a sudden she was womens champ. Where was the training or experience? Suddenly she changes her music, goes bananas and flails her arms around with the odd scream, executing awkward move after awkward move. In my eyes she got too carried away through no fault of her own and has ended up injured.
Womens wrestling has always been a tough cookie. Generally the US promoters saw women as a way to add a hot third dimension to their shows, maybe adding to a wrestlers personality by having them at ringside. Discounting the dinosaur years I don't remember any women wrestling until the attitude era when and I quote "we never use sex to sell..." (You remember the advert.) And after that, heaven forbid you change the formula else you won't sell tickets. So since that era Vinnie Mac has been scared to alter a lot of aspects of the show and probably couldn't comprehend women as anything but eye candy or bitch fighting. The Indy scene in recent years has brought a real strong crop of talented women who actually flow in their matches and generally get the crowds going and Japan has always had great women talents.
My ploy to you WWE is either sign women that can wrestle, train women to wrestle properly or leave them as the good old eye candy we expect. Half assing it only causes broken collar bones and wardrobe malfunctions.
