Guest Column By Joe Thunder
Welcome to your weekly ECW Thunder Struck thoughts. First off, I would like to go back two columns ago and discuss the trivia question. Kama and Shawn Michaels did in fact wrestle to a time limit draw at the 1995 KOTR tourney. This allowed Mabel to advance with a bye to the final round where he crushed Savio Vega to win the crown. Credit for getting the question correct goes to Jeff Ade and Woot2Jm, so congrats to both of them. That aside, ECW was pretty damn good last night so let's get to it.
We opened the show with the announcement of the elimination chamber match taking place at the December to Dismember PPV event. This seems to be ECW's way of stacking the deck against RVD, thus making him look more like a true champion for when he wins the match. The plan all along has clearly been to put the title back on RVD so this really should not surprise anyone. Who else, aside from RVD and maybe Sabu, would even possibly be capable of carrying the title for the brand? Also, one has to wonder how legitimate ECW seems when they start using the most extreme matches from the WWE brand, rather than ECW original matches.
We also had Sabu taking on Kevin Thorn last night. The two put on a great match as anyone would expect. As I've said before, Thorn and Sabu are both top notch competitors for the ECW brand. With a longer running program on Sci-Fi, I really feel that both of these guys could be huge for the show. This match also qualified Sabu for the elimination chamber match-up in December. Sabu always gives 110% of his body in every match that he competes in, yet he is still being held back in the company for reasons that can only be explained by his rumored drug problems.
Big doesn't even begin to describe the surprise we were treated to on last night's show. That's right folks; the Great Khali is out to kill another. After Daivari beat Shannon Moore, we were treated to the sight of Khali slamming Moore to the canvas. Can I ask what the hell is wrong with the WWE for keeping this idiotic monster in the company? Clearly the freak has no place in the storylines, as every wrestler he steps in the ring with is at huge risk. Accidental death or not, killing a man in training cannot possibly be a sign for a bright future in any organization.
Punk and Knox shared another small showdown this week as it was set up through the ridiculous use of the divas. It's funny that everyone talks about why women's wrestling will never be considered equal to men's, yet they use these divas for such idiot segments on television and take away all serious credibility. Then again, the same could be said for male wrestlers and some of the stupid storylines. Not sure where I was going with that, so let's throw it aside. Knox and Punk are going to put on an excellent match next week I'm certain. Let's only hope that after the match, these two men move on to bigger rivalries or can at least continue this rivalry without it aging too quickly. CM Punk appears to have plenty of potential, but the guy just needs to catch the right break that will advance his run in ECW.
Heyman wore a monkey suit. This rivalry seems as though it can go a far distance. ECW seems to be putting on better main events each and every week and actually remind me of the old school WWE/F more than anything else. The main events each week are set up without major storylines or announcements and the shows are filled with quality scheduling each week. RVD and Holly appeared to work very well together as a team, though I must say that Test continues to be impressive in every match he has. As far as the Big Show being the dominant champion of ECW, the guy just needs to slow down and take a break for awhile. It's easily seen that he isn't the athlete he once was.
No more ECW house shows? What is this going to mean? Is December to Dismember going to be the last time we actually see an ECW show? Is Vince going to kill this product as quickly as he started it? Though most people won't agree with me, I find it hard to see how on earth they can continue boosting brand popularity without the continuation of house shows. If this is Vince's way of killing a product due to his low satisfaction levels, then the man should probably be slapped in the face. ECW was something that Vince never enjoyed watching and he just assumed he could make a good profit off using the brand name. Unfortunately for Vince, the more he takes away the hardcore from Extreme Championship Wrestling, the quicker iMPACT! is going to start beating the show in ratings, especially with the move to prime time in a little over two weeks. Let's hope that this isn't the beginning of the end for ECW.
Overall, this was another good show for ECW. We can certainly look forward to the buildup over the next month for the December show. It will be interesting to see who else they decide to involve in the elimination chamber match-up. As for the Sandman and the possibility of him wrestling Umaga, let us hope that the Samoan Bulldozer meets the Singapore cane at Cyber Sunday. Now for some trivia. At what event did Sting defeat Meng while retaining his United States Championship? That's all for ECW this week. Until next time, you've been Thunder Struck.
