Guest Column By Dan Hoffman
How one deals with the various challenges in our lives from the early stages of our early childhood development into being a young adult progressing into adulthood is usually seen by those around us as part of who we are or our character.
Wrestlers and athletes, from the time they lace up a pair of boots to the time they wrestle their first match or compete in their first sports competition, are no different. The wrestling world was shocked last Sunday night and has been on fire ever since the announcement of Kurt Angle joining TNA, and now with his involvement in TNA's upcoming event Bound for Glory, the chatter has went for a dull hush about TNA to a deafening thunderous roar that engulfs every wrestling fan in it's wake.
The real test, however, is not ours to endure; it is Kurt's. Only he will know if he is truly strong enough to step back inside the ring and compete at a level that fans have become accustomed to seeing him compete at inside the squared circle.
Each one of us competes with ourselves on a day to day basis. For some of us, it is the challenge of simply getting through the day without having a seizure or other medical emergency. For others in school, it may be the challenge of meeting assignment deadlines.
No one stands in judgment of me and perhaps we shouldn't rush to judgment where Kurt Angle is concerned, but sit back, relax, and enjoy the matches he is in during his time in TNA. If it lasts a year, that's awesome. If it lasts five years, that's great, but only Kurt will know for sure what he is capable of delivering to his fans.
The potential now exists for us as wrestling fans to witness Kurt go toe to toe against opponents such as Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, Sting, & AJ Styles. Picture a one on one Six Sides Of Steel Cage Match between Kurt and Samoa Joe. TNA has always featured solid wrestling and with Angle in the mix, they have just increased the potential for even more combinations of exciting matches and storylines.
In that other promotion, Teddy Long made a "huge announcement" this week, As the WWE tried to capture the same energy and ride the same bolt of lightning that TNA unleashed, but from where I sit signing a third rate jock sniffer to a contract is not the same as signing one of the competition's cornerstones that built their modern wrestling generation upon away from them. Indeed, TNA has pulled a tremendous coup this week and as a result is already announcing huge house shows for Portugal, Mexico, and many other host sites.
How many of these house shows Kurt will appear on or if he'll simply just go the Sting route and do Pay Per Views and TV appearances is yet to be seen. I, however, intend to enjoy it for what it's worth and enjoy the events as they unfold.
I got the following e-mail recently and would like to answer it here:
"I wanted to ask you what your opinion is on Shawn Michaels is? Do you think he is a great worker and do you think he is one of the greatest of all time? Please reply, sir. Thank you."
Ritwik.
Now, my answer to this readers question:
Ritwik,
Always good to get a letter from a wrestling fan. Here are my thoughts on Shawn Michaels. I feel that Shawn's work ranks right up there with with Ric Flairs and is on par with Bret Hart. Few people have come along who have achieved in their career what Shawn has and with as much energy and ring presence. So yes, to answer your question, he is truly one of greats of the ring and deserving of a spot in the Wrestling Hall Of Fame.
I'd like to read your thoughts on this. Do you agree or disagree with me on this?
