Internet Wrestling Columnists: Can't we all just get along?
Posted by Kay Farmer on 03/09/2006

Welcome to another edition of Kay's Korner.

I had a really great wrestling conversation the other day (the first of what I hope to be many) with my old pal The Stinger and let me tell you, it definitely got my muses flowing. We discussed a lot about the WWE and found that while we had several things in common, we also had a lot of things that we didn't agree on. The absolutely fantastic part about the conversation was that neither one of us was trying to change the other's mind. We were only offering our opinions and our thoughts on different things. There was never a harsh word between us. There was never a, "You are wrong and I am right" attitude.

As wrestling columnists, I think that is exactly what we are here for. It's not necessarily to change how one thinks but to open one's mind a bit. There are several different aspects to opinions and the one incorrect assumption is if a person doesn't think the way that we do, then they are just wrong. The misconception is that because it is our opinions, then we must be right. It is very disturbing for me to see IWCs (Internet Wrestling Columnists) who argue amongst each other. What is the point of that? I really don't understand it because I feel that we really should respect each other's opinions.

First off, when it comes to opinions, nobody is right or wrong. We are all different in many different ways and I'm not just talking physical characteristics. Not all wrestling fans (or columnists) watch wrestling for the same reason. I personally watch it for the actual wrestling while there are others out there that watch it for the 'soap opera' part of it. I have the right to say that I don't particular care for the 'soap opera' part in wrestling. However, just because I feel that way doesn't give me the right to tell the person that is watching it for the 'soap opera' part that they are wrong for watching it for that reason. To be honest, I really feel that it is foolish and unwise to do that to any wrestling fan.

Secondly, opinions are like assholes and everybody has got one. Think about it for just a minute. Does everybody have the same exact opinion about everything that goes on in the world of professional wrestling? No, of course not! Everybody deserves the opportunity to be heard but they shouldn't have to argue to get their point across. It's really sad that we just can't all get along. I often wonder how critical the world of professional wrestling would be of IWCs if we were more tactful and respectful to the sport and to each other. Just because we are fans doesn't mean that we know every single little thing that happens in the world of wrestling.

While Stinger and I had several different opinions on different things, the flow of the conversation was absolutely great. He gave me several new ways to look at things while I brought up a few good points on my own. There was never a "You are wrong, I am right" atttiude about the conversation. It was two good friends who happen to have the same passion for wrestling. It was two good friends who enjoyed each other's company without all of the negative attitude which was very refreshing for a change.

I used to go into wrestling chat rooms on a regular basis but I don't do that anymore. I've met several great online friends that I would much rather sit and have a one on one conversation with than a bunch of strangers whose only purpose in the chat room is to start a fight. It's kind of like riding by a rowdy bar and then stopping in. You knew by the looks of it from the outside that it wasn't really going to be good. You knew that you would probably see a fight inside and while you may have been hankering to watch one, there is a very real possibility of you actually being involved in the bar fight instead of just watching it from the sidelines.

I would rather sit down like I did with Stinger the other day and enjoy our conversation. I'm not in this for the fame and Lord knows I'm not in it for the money. To be honest, my first real priority in being an IWC is to make sure that the 'old school' part of the business is never forgotten. I've always felt that the history of the business deserves somebody out there remembering and passing on the knowledge of 'old school' which is what I try and do. There are times when I feel like I should be doing more when it comes to the history of wrestling.

However, I do realize that a lot of people don't know about it and don't really care about it. And you know what? That's okay too. How can it not be? Some people have never cared for anything that has the word history involved in it. I'm sure that there are some wrestling fans that are the same way. It really doesn't bother me. If anything, it gets me excited because I've got a chance to bring something different to the IWC community. It offers a challenge to me that I had never really thought about until this morning.

Being a wrestling fan for over twenty five years, I feel that I have a lot to offer those who have just came into the wrestling world. I also feel that I can help other fans go back down memory lane and enjoy what I like to call, 'the good old days of rassling'. Being an IWC opens up a whole new world to me that I'm just now starting to see.

I would like to see the IWC world come together in a bond of sort. Sure, we are all bonded due to wrestling but we also need to become bonded due to the fact that there are a lot of us putting a lot of time and effort into our columns. If we ever want our columns to be taken seriously, then we need to take each other a bit more seriously and try to understand each other's point of view insteading of pointing fingers at each other while hurling "You are wrong" at each other. We need to be able to open our minds and appreciate what each and every one of us bring to the table.

We all have different opinions and that is an absolutely fantastic thing. We can all give each other something to think about. We can also all be a bit more constructive in our critisms of other columns. I've never claimed to be a great IWC and I never will. I've got my reasons for writing just like everybody else does. I would just like to see us all respect each other's opinions more and open our minds a bit more. The sky would be the limit if we could all do that.

Well, that's it for this edition of Kay's Korner. Thanks again for reading! All feedback can be sent to lilwrestlegrl@yahoo.com.
