A Family Tradition Continues
Posted by Kay Farmer on 09/05/2005

Welcome to another edition of Kay's Korner.

I have to say that it feels really good to back. I'm sorry that I've been away for so long but moving from one state to another is hectic and very time consuming. Time was not on my side and I wasn't able to let everybody know exactly what was going on and I do apologize for that. However, I'm settled in now and ready to get back to doing what I love to do: writing wrestling columns.

During my 'hiatus', I spent a week with my niece and two nephews here in my new home. Having them around kept me from 1) getting too homesick and 2) provided me with hours upon hours of entertainment. Trust me on this, having three kids and no cable or satellite television at all can be a lot of fun or at the very least make you feel like you need to pull your hair out by its roots.

Luckily for me, I had a secret weapon.

A DVD player is an awesome thing to have at a time like this. We watched every wrestling DVD that I own except one (and that's only because we ran out of time) and I have to say, my niece and nephews are wrestling fans just like their Aunt Kay. (And just like their Aunt Kay, it's Papa's fault!) I enjoyed listening to them talk to each other about who was going to win and why. There were matches that they had never seen before, as it was before their time but that didn't bother them. Just as there were several matches that they had seen before but that didn't matter to them either; they still enjoyed watching the wrestling. Seeing them took me back to my own childhood.

As we all know, I grew up watching the NWA - Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling. I couldn't help but notice the same twinkle and shine in their eyes that I had in mine as a child. It was nice to see the 'family tradition' being carried on by them. I knew that they had the bug, as everybody in our family seems to have it, but I wasn't expecting the passion in their eyes to be as bright as mine.

Each one of them are different when it comes to being a wrestling fan (and let's face it, as fans we are all different) but make no mistake about it; all three of them are huge wrestling fans. I have to admit though if I had to pick one that was just like me growing up when it comes to wrestling, it would be my youngest nephew Timmy.

Timmy is nine years old (soon to be ten) and totally part of John Cena's Chain Gang. He even went as so far as to dress up as him at Halloween last year, complete with the chain and lock around his neck. Yeah, Timmy's got the wrestling fever bad. He's got it so bad that we have to keep an extra eye on him otherwise, he wrestles his older brother to death, which by the way, is NOT something recommended.

When John Cena appeared on the television screen, Timmy's eyes just lit up like fireworks on the Fourth of July. There was absolutely no talking to him while Cena was on. He didn't hear you. He totally became wrapped up in seeing Cena rap and wrestle. He would lay on the bean bag with his head resting on his hands and never moved until the DVD was completely over. (Kids are so smart nowadays; he even had to see the extras.)

I couldn't help but smile as I watched him like a proud parent carrying on the 'family tradition'. Granted wrestling nowadays is NOT what it was when I was growing up, it is still wrestling and that is all that matters to me personally. Timmy also made me realize that either you love wrestling or hate it. There really is no imbetween.

They were all disappointed that they couldn't watch Raw or Smackdown that week. It was funny watching them watch the clock and telling me when it was getting ready to come on. It's almost as if they expected me to fix it with magic. Unfortunately for them, Aunt Kay's not that good and we were without it.

Until Saturday night. The satellite was finally installed and all was right in the world. With my parents there to pick the rugrats up, we were slowly but surely running out of time together. We eased our withdrawls by finding Velocity and watching it. (I have to admit if you want to watch good wrestling, give Velocity a try. Granted, they do a lot of reviewing what happened in the week but that actually worked out good for us this time. We got to see the big stuff that we had missed.)

So here we were, three generations sitting together and watching wrestling. Man, all was right in my world that night. I got the opportunity to watch wrestling with my dad, which is something that doesn't happen very much at all now, along with my niece and nephews. We all talked during the show, asking dad what had happened and he told us with slow anticipation cause he knew something that we didn't. Oh yeah, my dad enjoyed every minute of that night.

Sunday morning came way too soon and it was time for them to leave. I had never kept them for an entire week before so it was a new experience for all of us. I know that they had a great time with me but they were ready to go home. School was starting the next day and they were eagerly anticipating going back to see their friends.

As I watched them drive down my driveway, heading back towards their home, I had to smile. I love my family and I love the fact that my dad showed me what wrestling was all about. I also love the fact that even though I am not there, he is continuing the 'family tradition' with the next generation. Maybe soon we can all head to my grandpa's house and watch wrestling together, all four generations of us. I hope so.

Well, that's it for this edition of Kay's Korner. I hope you have enjoyed reading. All feedback can be sent to lilwrestlegrl@yahoo.com.
