Welcome to another edition of Kay’s Korner.
After watching Raw last night, I can honestly sit here and tell you that things are definitely looking up in the WWE. The show was one of the best that I have seen in a long while and it is long overdue. With the talent that is on Raw, it is almost expected by the fans that Raw shine. Last night, Raw did shine and boy, did it ever.
Batista’s face turn is now final and complete. I can honestly say that I was sitting on the edge of my seat with my best friend Tammy wondering if it would happen and when it would happen. (Common sense told me that it would be the last thing they did.) For weeks now, Batista has had Triple H in his ear, along with Ric Flair, telling him that they can rule the wrestling world if Batista goes to Smackdown.
As much as it would have been a major coo for Batista to go to Smackdown, I have to say that I was very pleased with what happened at the contract signing. I was also happy to note that I was right all along; Triple H was the one behind the J.B.L. limo trying to hit Batista. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Triple H is the ‘Cerebral Assassin’ for more than one reason. The main reason being that he will do anything and everything to keep what he desires the most, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Belt. How many times have we seen him turn his back on friends to get what he wants? Too many times to count.
I think the way this story line was played was a great testament to the ‘old school’ days of wrestling. As much as the fans wanted to see Batista turn on Triple H, it was slow played with great execution. Anticipation is always needed in the wrestling world and we definitely have to give props to the WWE for a well played story line. They took their time each week with just a little bit of a taste of what it could be like if Batista did turn on Triple H. Week after week, it was the small things that kept us hanging for more. (i.e. Batista getting thrown out of ringside of purpose and smiling as he walked back up the ramp afterwards.)
I have also noticed the last few weeks that there is more wrestling, which I think is awesome. I have always watched wrestling for the wrestling and am pleased beyond words that they have decided to give the fans what they really want. The matches are really starting to shine. The one thing that I have noticed more than anything is there is a lot of headlocks going around. I never really thought about it until the thought popped in my head last night. It looks like the ‘old school’ of wrestling is trying to fit in with the new style of wrestling. I say bring it on because it looks great from this fan’s point of view.
I have to admit that I got a little nostalgic while watching Edge and Christian tag team together last night. Man, what a great tag team those two were and still are, as was evident in last night’s match with Randy Orton and Shawn Michaels. It was almost as if they had never been apart. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire match never once feeling as though the match was missing anything. The almost conchairto had me nostalgic for the E & C Dynasty to pick right up where they left off.
Randy Orton has a great wrestling presence in the ring and absolutely, hands down, the best drop kick that I have ever witnessed in my life. He has got the ‘it’ factor and can go the distance as long as he can stay away from the injuries that plague the wrestling world. With Shawn has his partner, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they worked together. Everybody has their opinions but Shawn Michaels is a great wrestler who can still go toe to toe with the young wrestlers and make everybody look good. There are very few wrestlers who can do that and do it as well as Shawn Michaels.
My hat goes off to those four for one of the best tag team matches that I have seen in a while. There were so many close counts and the crowd was hot for every spot. From counting Shawn slamming Christian’s head into the turnbuckle to counting Randy’s forearms to Edge’s chest, this crowd was into this match from the very beginning. They did an absolutely great job with this match and it showed with the crowd’s reaction.
The Snitsky and Shelton deal had me grinning a bit too. Who knew Shelton had a mean streak in him? Shelton is another young man that has surprised me since he came onto Raw. I had never really imagined him without Charlie Haas. Now, I found myself shaking my head at not noticing sooner that this man has got major talent. He is another one that, as long as he stays injury free, will go far in the wrestling business.
I enjoyed the Women’s Championship match between Trish Stratus, Victoria, and Molly Holly. Here are three of the hardest working female wrestlers in the business that really put on a good match last night. It’s too bad that the Diva winner Christy Hemme slapping Trish over Candace shadowed all of that hard work in the ring. I don’t understand why that happened or what they are doing. It saddens me to see the women work as hard as they do only to pick a fight with a Diva winner.
It was a nice match between Simon Diamond and Chris Jericho. I am biased when it comes to Chris Jericho because I enjoy watching him wrestle very much but Simon actually wrestled last night. That was a nice change from his ‘insult the crowd and whip somebody with the weight belt’ scenario that has been played out week after week.
Kane vs. Tyson Tomko was a match that I wasn’t expecting. Granted, it was really strange hearing Tyson talk because he has always been Christian's silent enforcer. The match was not a stand out match but it did show Kane and Tyson wrestling some. I can’t help but wonder if this is the next feud for Kane. Time will tell.
Muhammad Hussan with Daivari has been an interesting pair. At first, I have to admit that I didn’t care for the storyline. Now that I have had a few weeks to digest it and get over the shock, I think this can go a long ways. I also think that throwing Chris Benoit in the mix was a good move and are eagerly anticipating this match for next week.
Chris Masters had a decent debut match with Steven Richards. Of course, Steven didn’t stand a chance and we knew he didn’t stand a chance but he still tried. The match lasted longer than I had anticipated. It will be interesting to see how his character develops in the upcoming weeks.
Last but not least, I really enjoyed the tidbits between Eric Bishoff and Theodore Long. I’ve enjoyed the rivalry between the two and hope to see it continue through Wrestlemania. Here’s hoping Theodore keeps his job this week on Smackdown.
