Hello, hello and welcome to another edition of ...ATWIT! If you remember weeks ago I made it a necessity to not talk about JBL and his title win against Eddie. I thought that there were already topics after topics of the same view spreading around and my column would just get lost in the mix. But after seeing Randy Orton win the World Championship on Summer Slam last week I didn't see the intrigue that JBL had. Maybe it was because Orton actually deserved it, but any ways, today I'd like to discuss not only Ortons major victory but also view way's that entourages like Evolution can help the career of a young superstar.
I certainly loved the good old school days of when the Canadian Crippler's music would hit and he would walk down the aisle with his fully polished belt and a toothless grin. It gave you a feeling that all was fine and dandy in the wrestling world. But those lustful day's are over now and we're getting somebody new to fulfill Benoit's old duties of being the main event superstar of the WWE. That man is the third generation superstar known as Randy "Legend Killer" Orton. Yes, Orton is now the youngest World Title holder in WWE history and I couldn't be happier for him. Sure Benoit was good while he lasted, but things got only and there needed to be more spice to the title. It's like sex (stay with me here), you can't do the same position every time you have intercourse because it's simply boring. You have to try other new positions just for the hell of it. Sure the other position was good and could possibly be better than the others, but you can't be positive until you try new things. Same formula applies with Benoit and Orton. Benoit was good while he lasted, but new things have certainly come along and I for one like that very much. Yet somewhere in the back of my big noggin I have to ask myself if I should really be so happy with the new titleholder.
I think that even if wrestling fans don't enjoy Randy Orton as a superstar that they loved the move to put him as the World Champion because the only other person to take the belt away from Benoit would have to be none other than Triple H. I think we have had our own share of Triple H distress for the year so it was a good idea to put the belt on somebody new and original. It was rumored for months that Trips wanted to feud with young Orton and this past RAW we saw that dream feud take place. Dream feud? Yes, for the past couple of months we've had Eddie vs. JBL and Benoit vs. Kane so in this day and time I would consider Trips vs. Orton a quality protagonist/antagonist matchup! Though I'm sure that Triple H will take the belt from Orton in a matter of months I like the fact that we now have a new upper card eventer in the coveted main event mix.
Orton getting the title also vaguely reminds me of Triple H taking the top spot over Shawn Michaels during the DX days. Things didn't play out quite the same back then because HBK shortly went into retirement, which pushed Triple H into the main event level. But you have to admit that it's pretty enjoyable to see young Orton succeeding over the veteran's like Benoit or Trips.
Some have made good points as to why you would put the belt on a rookie and not somebody that has experience and is long overdue for another shot at gold, like Jericho for example. I would be delighted to see Jericho in the main event picture soon, but right now I don't think he has the fan base or charisma that he did as a heel. Now he's just getting killed to a pulp by Batista or getting unexpectedly speared by Edge. By all means I don't consider that championship caliber material. Yet Randy seems to excel at all the levels Jericho once possessed. He has talent, a good cockiness, and overall commitment. Again, I'm not speculating that Jericho is too old or lost his lust for wrestling, but he just doesn't have what Orton has at the moment. Evolution has been the poster stable for the WWE for years. Even lagging injuries by both Orton and Batista couldn't keep down the pure hype that is Evolution. They took up tons and tons of TV time week after week (which isn't a good thing) and main evented RAW every other night. Maybe if writers had Jericho joining up with other top heels and dominating the roster instead of interviewing Kane, Lita, or the RAW Diva Search contestants then he may have swiped the title from Benoit by now.
The main point of this topic was not the praise Orton's ambitious talents and his new found respect among my peers. I wanted to make the point that young wrestlers get over more by have older veterans with them to guide their careers and make a name with the vets. From Triple H getting the ropes from HBK to Lesnar starting up with the legendary mind of Paul Heyman it is self-evident that in this day and time that having somebody with a youngster can undoubtedly boost a rookie to superstar status in no time. Like everything else in wrestling there are exceptions to this rule, but meager exceptions at the most. Sure John Cena didn't have anyone by him to boost his name to the fans, but he got his start as being the first opponent against Undertaker in his comeback. Yes, he lost, though he got noticed by beginning a feud with a legend. Others have made a new for themselves in the wrestling world but wanted to get noticed in other ways. Matt Hardy is and will always be known as one half of one of the top WWE tag teams of all time, the Hardy Boyz. After the roster split a couple years ago Hardy took on a singles career, which was failing until he went into the cruiserweight division and started a feud with the high flying legend, Rey Mysterio Jr!
I think that it would be better for every young and growing superstar to have a veteran to carry them and give them more TV time. Even though Heidenreich is surely going to fail I think it's a positive quality to have Paul Heyman be with him as his manager. The same aspect is being applied to Paul London. Having him along with a former Cruiserweight Champion like Billy Kidman can only be good for his career with the WWE. Hopefully the WWE is already seeing this process come to work and will do this with other growing athletes like Benjamin or Haas. As for Orton, I'm sure that he will stay in the top spot for a very lengthy time. I hope he doesn't get knocked around in the mid-card spot like Jericho, but its inevitable that the same thing could happen with Orton. In the mean time I'll hold my breath and wish that Triple H isn't holding the belt for at least another three to four months.
Once again thanks for viewing my column. I hope most were intrigued in the topic today and you can e-mail me at stlunaticv2@yahoo.com if you have any questions or comments. I usually rant on and on at the end of my topics, but today I'm just feeling like keeping it short but sweet. Thanks again and ...And Thats What I Think!
