Hello and welcome to my debut column for The Wrestling Voice. Ive always loved this site and have been a fan since three weeks ago when I found it off Mike Steele's AIM information page (Yes, pretty odd way to find a web site.) Any ways, Im proud to be a member of this great site and will likely have a new column up every week (Or until I get kicked off of this site for not being good enough.)
For the past two or three months there has been much speculation on how Smack Down can change for the better and I cant hold my opinions in any longer either. Such things as putting Scott Steiner as the main heel to having RVD turn heel have been lingering in tons of columns and I will gets to those ideas and many more now.
First I would like to get to the idea that has spawned for a couple of years now by many people and that is bulking up the cruiserweight division. The WWE has never had anything close to what NWA: TNA has with its X-Division, we all know that for a fact but what we dont know is why. Why cant Vinces wallet put major high-risk superstars into the struggling cruiserweight division? I dont think anyone has an answer for that. My view is that Vince just doesnt like high-flying wrestlers. Hed rather have a seven-foot, 400 pound monster in the ring to sell tickets and thats just bad philosophy for todays wrestling society. We dont want see beefy wrestlers who have poor athletic ability; we want to see faced-paced, top rope action. Now I dont think Ive seen a great cruiserweight match that left me jaw-dropped since Rey Jr. and Matt Hardy V1 main evented some fantastic Smack Down matches. Now we have Ultimo Dragon who has just been released after hardly doing anything, Paul London who is tag-teaming with Billy Kidman on Velocity, and Chavo Jr. who is losing to his old never-was father and Jackie. Hopefully the WWE will come to realize that the cruiserweight division is the future and they better realize fast!
Next we get to Steiner going to Smack Down to be the next top heel. I know where people are coming from with the idea. We all know that Steiner isnt the most gifted wrestler to grace the squared canvas but he has a good heel persona that we love to hate and hes a much bigger name than John Bradshaw Layfield. I admit it wouldnt be the worst to have him as a top heel against Eddie Guerrero for a couple of months and then give Booker T a push in time for Summer Slam (No way in hell I want to see Steiner headline a top PPV like Summer Slam.) But Steiners nagging injuries could keep us from this idea.
Can anybody picture Mr. Thursday Night as a heel because I myself am having a hard time doing so? Fans just are attracted to RVD for his mello mic work and his fancy footwork. To have him turn heel wont be easy but wouldnt you love to see another Eddie/RVD ladder match like the legendary one they had on RAW awhile back (My mouth is watering by the near thought of that.) The easiest way to get Rob into the top heel mix is to have him and JBL become friends with JBL showing Rob the tricks of the trade as far as the stock market goes. From there RVD can come out with cut hair and a suit. IÂ’m sure that would piss fans off and make him a fast enemy with Latino Heat. Just some food for thought.
On to one of the newest faces, the pale rider, Mordecai. His gimmick can either be a hit or miss and only time will tell. I have great hope in Mordecai and I think that in time he will make a major name for himself. Of coarse hes only been in two matches and they've both been squash matches, but Im sure that with his Reverend D'Von with a little more spice gimmick he should be a noticeable face for years to come (Plus he has the Razors Edge for a finisher and that alone makes him one of my favorite wrestlers.)
Finally consider some low cards that can make a fast impact. First and foremost you have to look at Mark Jindrak. He has a noticeable name, a good (though recycled) gimmick, and hes with the number one manager right now, Dollar-Dollar Teddy Long ya'll. Its easy for me to see him bucking heads with John Cena instead of highlighting Velocity. How about Orlando Jordan? His kickboxing technique is some fresh air and I believe he can become a quick superstar with this technique along with a good gimmick that hopefully will come together in time. All of these ideas are just a few of the many ways Smack Down can rebound into the great show it used to be not too long ago.
So for the first time on The Wrestling Voice I will end the way I hopefully will for awhile....And Thats What I Think. E-mail me at jayd7@sc.rr.com and tell me what you think about way's Smack Down can benefit from your wisdon and also talk to me about what you think about TNA Impact, which will be my next topic.
