My Favorite Time of Year for Wrestling
Posted by Jacob Kuhn on 01/06/2007

This isn’t specifically about any news story, as I generally like to write about. Actually, I just want to convey my excitement as the Royal Rumble is coming closer and closer. Although it might lack some of the excitement of previous Rumbles, the event itself is still the best part of the WWE calendar for me.

The very first Pay Per View I ever ordered was the 1993 Royal Rumble. This was back in the day when I was still able to convince myself that wrestling was not predetermined. I mean, I knew it was, but someone I was able to hide that fact deep inside me and never let it out. It wasn’t the first Rumble I had ever seen, but the first one I had ever seen live. I was hooked for good. From the very moment when Ric Flair entered the ring at number one, until Yokozuna threw Randy Savage out to win the event, I didn’t get up from my seat to even use the bathroom.

As far as the rest of the event goes, everything leading up to the Rumble match itself is only filler. Some times the championship matches or others are worth it, but are unnecessary for what I have paid for. It’s when the number one entry comes down that the true excitement begins.

It didn’t stop for me at 1993. That Rumble will always have a place in my heart, don’t get me wrong. They always say there is something about your first time. However, every year I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to see who would win the shot at the WWF/WWE title at Wrestlemania. Even in the cases where either the match or the outcome was disappointing, the other was not.

The past two Rumble matches have been rather lackluster for me. Because of school, I really haven’t had the chance to follow who the favorites for this year are. Batista was obvious in 2005 and Mysterio wasn’t much of a surprise in 2006. However, this year, I have absolutely no idea who is going to be the last man standing. And, the WWE roster is still full of people that I like to see, so that hopefully will make it as exciting as it once was.

The way I look at the Royal Rumble though is that it is like sex or pizza. Even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. I’ll definitely be writing about it once it has passed.
