Howlings - In defense of TNA
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 11/11/2005

I wanted to touch base with everyone, since I’ve been gone again. This time I was in Las Vegas for a week covering the Professional Bull Riding Finals, and I’m having a bit of trouble changing hats. I’ve watched next to no wrestling, since I was never near a television when the shows were on. I forgot to order Taboo Tuesday, and haven’t had much time to watch the other shows that I have waiting for me on my DVR. But I’ve been reading stuff the past couple of days, and quite a few things seem to be going on.

First I want to mention the Kurt Angle “You suck!” tantrum – which I DID see. One only has to watch him to know that it is absolutely true about him wanting to be the very best that the WWE has ever had. I have no doubt that part of that segment was a shoot. He has given up everything to entertain; not necessarily for the fans, but to be the greatest wrestler. His choice has come at a big price and it remains to be seen if the sacrifices will ultimately be worth it.

Christian left while I was gone, and I have mixed feelings about that. I’m sorry to see him go, but I really think he was wasted with the WWE. They did with him like they do with so many others; give a giant push – maybe at the wrong time – and then jerk the rug out from under him. By that I mean, they never really gave him the ball. Oh, they pretended to, but it never actually happened. I fear the same thing will happen with Shelton Benjamin and Orlando Jordan.

I get confused when I see who is, in fact, getting those pushes. Carlito? Sorry, but I haven’t been one bit impressed with him. Chris Masters? Well, no one can deny that he has one hell of a body, but beyond that I’m not excited about him either. I think Rob Conway is a really good wrestler, but he is getting lost in the shuffle. Until his character catches on he will flounder around, I’m afraid. I happen to like Ken Kennedy, but they need to take it slower with him. I am very high on Bobby Lashley and hope they do right by him.

The Hurricane is now Gregory Helms. Will he ever get to wrestle someone who can compliment his style and let him show off? Who cares if he wins when he faces Rosey? Whether Hurricane or Helms, I’d like to see him work with others that fit him. He might not be a main eventer by WWE standards, but he can certainly do the job and entertain.

Is forehead-biting the attack of choice now? Ric Flair bit Triple H and Scotty Too Hotty bit Kennedy. Interesting way of inflicting injury, don’t you think?

I don’t think that when the WWE lost Christian they thought too much about it. But other things have come to light that might make Christian’s departure seem more serious. Chris Benoit’s contract is almost up, and he’s not real happy, apparently. Well, that’s not good, for it would not be a smart thing to let him go. There are more things though, and they come in the form of injuries.

Edge has a torn pectoral muscle, and is going to need surgery. Bad deal? Yeah, but there’s more. Batista has also been injured. He hurt his back during a dark match and will need either surgery or rehabilitation. If he has surgery he might be out for three months. Whether he would work during rehab, I don’t know. What do they do with the WWE Heavyweight Championship? While there is never a good time to get hurt, the timing of this really sucks all the way around.

I continue with the theme of my last column about TNA. Looking stronger friends, looking stronger. The WWE is weakened by some losses right now, and if nothing else the newness and excitement of TNA is carrying it right along. They put on a good show for their first two-hour special on Spike TV and it is said that the feeling in the locker room is very upbeat and positive.

Let me know what your views are.

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
