Howlings - The draft, and ECW
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 06/06/2005

A couple of exciting (at least I hope so) things are going to be happening within the next four weeks, the first of which is the draft. Tonight on Raw the first draft ‘pick’ as it were, will take place. There is one person whose name stands out to me that really needs to move from Raw to SmackDown!, and that man is Christian. I know that I am not in the minority with that opinion. Christian needs to be on a show where he will have an opportunity to showcase his talents to the best of his abilities, and that is not happening on Monday night. He has a strong following, and has greatly improved his in-ring work, as well as his microphone skills. Last week was a perfect example of that. His promo for the draft was really good – he said all the right things. I think he could shake up Thursday nights, and that is something that needs to happen. Funny though, I often like SmackDown! better than Raw, for reasons that I can’t quite put my finger on completely. Be that as it may, Christian should be the first athlete to check out of Raw and join the SmackDown! express.

As for who should move to Monday night, that’s a bit tough for me. I would like it to be Booker T, but since they have he – and his wife – in this stupid angle with well, Angle, that would be hard. Same goes for Kurt, Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio. I fear they have locked the four of them into something that they have to stay involved with, for awhile at least. Still, I would love to see Booker show up to take down Edge and start a new dispute.

I received quite a bit of response when I asked for feedback about the draft, so thank you. One person said that the draft was a good idea because we need new feuds, and that is so true. Things have gotten so predictable that many fans are aching for anything new and different, and the draft is one way that could be accomplished. Another individual named names – he feels that Christian and Kane need to go to SmackDown!, with Undertaker and Kurt Angle making the walk to Raw. That could be good. He also believes that the WWE needs more women who can wrestle. God knows that I’ve said that a lot myself, but I guess that I’m always a bit surprised when a guy would rather see a female athlete rather than a Diva. I must admit that I like that, though.

I’ve complained about it before, but the repeats of events get SO old! On Raw, the latest was that we had to see the Batista / Triple H beating twice, once each hour. I guess we must make sure that any of those viewers that tune in late don’t feel left out. SmackDown! isn’t without it’s share. Just how many times must we see the Eddie Guerrero / Rey Mysterio saga? The WWE has shown their current problems in all ways possible, from small bits of information to the entire feud from its inception to the present time. I understand that they don’t want the fans to forget their disagreement but by the time the two of them reunite for battle it could very well seem anticlimactic.

Not all things are bad though. Raw has Chris Jericho – enough said. There is also the afore-mentioned Christian. Last week the match between Batista and Hassan had the perfect ending as far as I was concerned. Hassan went into the match undefeated and walked out of it the same way, even though Muhammad was given the victory due to a disqualification. In turn, Batista absolutely went wild on Hassan and partner in crime, Daivari. I thought this was a good way to put Hassan over and still allow Batista to not lose any credibility. I liked that.

SmackDown! gives us Bob Holly and Charlie Haas. I’ve always liked Haas, and recognize the talents of Holly, but Bob hasn’t often been very fan-friendly. Lately though, he has been playing to the crowds a little bit more and they seem to respond to him, and I like seeing that. Heidenreich did not really take off as a crazy monster, so they have turned him into a crazy monster with feelings, and that has done the trick. His playing to kids is a cool thing and he has caught on quite nicely now. I find him much more entertaining and enjoy watching him a lot more than before.

There have been many video packages for the ECW pay-per-view, One Night Stand, the latest of those being done by The Dudley Boyz, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman. In less than a week that PPV will take place and I can’t wait for it. The card that I’ve seen looks to be really good and I expect great things from this. I only hope that the invasion that some of the WWE wrestlers are planning doesn’t ruin what sounds like a super show. I’m sure there is a method to their madness, but it would be a shame if the current WWE roster doesn’t allow the ECW of old (as much as that can be) to shine. I’m sure we will be given a little bit more information this week regarding that, but this fan would really just like to sit down and watch and enjoy as much of an ECW show as possible. The WWE has the capabilities of ruining this event or putting the cherry on top of the sundae, and I only hope the result is the latter.

A special shout out and congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Matt Rodriguez! Super wedding, guys! All the best.

Enjoy One Night Stand!

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
