Howlings - My rants on Raw
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 05/18/2005

There was a lot of action last night on Raw, although not necessarily in the wrestling sense of the word. Some of it was unexpected, although one particular incident was what many had been waiting for. Because I actually enjoyed this show and the events that transpired I felt compelled to write about it, in no particular order. In one segment we saw the return of two men who had been MIA due to injuries. Randy Orton came back from shoulder surgery – though not with any in-ring action yet – to gloat about the fact that he was not going to be affected by the upcoming draft since he was on the injured reserve list. He could care less. Until, that was, Vince McMahon also made his return down the ramp. With more McMahon strut than usual, Vince began his traditional tirade by telling Orton just how skinny he looked; “Your neck looks like a stack of dimes!” (OK?!?) Randy whined that he hadn’t been able to train, what did he expect? Actually, I also thought that Orton did look a lot smaller than usual, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wore a suit one size larger to accentuate the fact. Anyway, after some more insults, the WWE leader told Orton in no uncertain terms that he would be involved in the draft. It will begin in three weeks and will take one month to finalize. As is always the case, if done right this could be quite entertaining. If not, we are in for one boring month.

Batista might have surprised a few when he came to the aid of Ric Flair. If nothing else, Flair himself looked a bit skeptical. Earlier in the evening he had let Flair know that Ric was the only one Batista respected in Evolution, and he proved that by coming to his rescue when Flair was double-teamed by Christian and Tyson Tomko after Ric’s victory over Christian. Could this be the way that Batista breaks up the Flair / Triple H marriage? This is another interesting event that could transpire during the draft.

I really thought that the segment between Lilian Garcia and Viscera was quite funny. Lilian has such great facial expressions, and ‘Big Vis’ is great in his role as a sex machine. I have thought for quite a while now that Viscera has a speaking voice reminiscent of Barry White. Obviously I was not the only one to get that idea, since the song he sung for Lilian was White’s super song, “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Baby”. (I think that is the title of it!) And then for Vis to put Lilian’s name into the song – good stuff. This was all fluff, but I enjoyed it none the less, and found it entertaining.

Finally, the action that most fans were waiting for, the turn by Lita on her ‘husband’ Kane and her siding with Edge. I have mixed feelings about this. I firmly believe, even though admittedly I’m going by the information that has been given to us, that Matt Hardy got a raw (no pun intended) deal here. On an emotional level I think that putting Lita and Edge together is not the best thing to do. I can only imagine how Hardy felt about both the show and what is going on at the present time. If I had to give a vote, I would probably lean towards my feelings and say I don’t like it. Understanding the nature of the business however, I completely grasp why McMahon used this to his advantage. Are there those out there who really did not think that Vince would go this route? The fans are having a great time hating the two of them, and if that is the case, why not capitalize on it? It fuels the fire of heat that Lita and Edge are getting right now, and I do get the reasoning behind it. I read that Lita was not thrilled with the way the story line is presently going down, but I can’t imagine that it came as a big surprise to her, either.

By the way, I had to laugh at Eric Bischoff’s tirade about ECW. He said that he wants to take the letters ECW out of Raw completely. Let’s see, if you take him literally, that will leave us with Ra. Interesting concept.

So what do you readers think? Are you for the draft, or do you not care one way or another? Will it really help both Raw and SmackDown!? Let me hear your views. Until then,

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
