Howlings - Releases; Ken Shamrock
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 04/15/2005

I think that most fans feel the same way, but I am going to voice it anyway. What the hell is the WWE thinking? First, and a huge surprise, Matt Hardy gets released. It certainly seemed that he did not ask to be set free. Instead, this appeared to be yet another kick in the teeth for this good young athlete. His return to the ring was just around the corner, and after the Edge / Lita debacle most everyone was feeling that Hardy would move over to SmackDown! from Raw and that would be it. Instead, he was given his walking papers. So just where does that leave Matt? That’s hard to say. He has lost a friend (he thought) in Edge, and a girlfriend of five years in Lita. As if that is not bad enough, he has now lost his job. It makes no sense.

Then around this same time, Rhyno was released. OK, so he did something stupid, but would the likes of Kurt Angle or Shawn Michaels have gotten the boot under the same circumstances? I say no, but it was a good way for the company to fire a man that they felt was no help to them in the first place. I disagree, for what that’s worth.

Finally, it has been announced that Molly Holly is also now gone, although this one seems to be mutual. Holly has been dissatisfied with her position in the company for some time now. But rather than try to make things work out to keep a good worker on the payroll, they let her walk. What a smart thing to do – get rid of women who can actually wrestle. But not to worry, they just announced that the second Diva Talent Search will soon take place. I have no doubt that we will see plenty of women who can work in the ring, don’t you agree? If you missed the sarcasm in that, trust me, it’s there! I said it before, but it bears repeating – Christy and company are a slap in the face of every true female athlete in the WWE. What a shame that in Molly’s last match for the company she was covered by Christy. Sad to have to job for a no-talent Diva.

There is one more who could be released. This man has been out due to injury, and as far as I’m concerned, even though he is getting better much faster than anticipated, I think it has been long enough. I’ve tired of waiting for him to fully recover. That person is Vince McMahon. Well, think about it. He hasn’t been around to run things properly. His daughter and son-in-law have had to pick up the slack. He’s getting a bit long in the tooth anyway, he can’t take bumps anymore – it really is time for him to take a walk. Let’s pack his bag for him. Yes, this is tongue-in-cheek, but it makes about as much sense as some of the other things they have been doing lately.

Here are a few other things that bothered me this week. First, I had all but forgotten that Kane and Lita were ‘married’, until that is, this Monday. Now Kane is helping Lita to scare Trish, and apparently Lita is finding him much more attractive, as they enjoyed a kiss. Kind of weird, this. As far as WWE newcomer Chris Masters is concerned, the fans certainly don’t find him a ‘Masterpiece’, not in the least. There is no interest whatsoever, and I wonder how much time he will be given to see if that turns around.

Thursday on SmackDown!, we were given yet another copycat, as Carlito introduced his own Carlito’s Cabana. Look out Roddy Piper and Chris Jericho! I did like the fact that MNM (Melina, Nitro, and Mercury) were introduced, and I hope they get to wrestle soon. I do like seeing new talent in the ring, the pivotal word there being TALENT! I must admit that I also liked the way they have taken the surgery that Randy Orton just had to undergo and put it into the story line. We now know that Orton will be gunning for Batista when he is healed up, and that might not be a bad thing.

Heidenreich wrestled someone – don’t know who – and as with Masters there is no following at all. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, he read one of his poems about, of all things, breaking wind. I have to say the same thing I did in the first paragraph – what the hell? I feel sorry for him, to have to go out there in front of all those people and read that crap. I guarantee that he isn’t getting enough money for that. The latest SD should have been one-half hour long, because the only thing worth watching was the match between Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero. That was superb, the rest of the show pretty much sucked. Wow, I’m very negative today, but the WWE goes from first-rate to the bottom of the barrel in one quick turn. It amazes me that the shows can go sour as quickly as they do.

I don’t know how many of you remember Ken Shamrock from his stint in the WWE. He is also known as the World’s Most Dangerous Man, and before and after his wrestling gig he was better known as a martial arts specialist. He is the first man to be inducted into the Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Fame and holds the Mixed Martial Arts record of 26 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws. When I saw that he was going to be competing on television a few days ago I really wanted to see him do his thing. At 41years of age, Shamrock had his work cut out for him, as he faced the 30-year-old Rich Franklin in a three-round match, each round being five minutes long. I was ready for him to win, and intended to write a cool bit about how he was still able to pull things off. You guessed it, he is now 26-9-2, as he lost by TKO with 2:18 left in the first round. But let me say that this man was so classy when interviewed, without any attitude, bitterness, or animosity toward his opponent. Shamrock said, “If I win this fight then I keep going on; if I lose the fight then they gotta build a star off of me. That’s just how business works…I was glad to step in here with Rich. With his attitude and skill level he can go far in this business, and is the kind of person I like to see go to the top.” Franklin was no slouch in the class department either, as he went straight to Ken when the fight was stopped, waited until he got up, and thanked him for the opportunity. Shamrock’s response? “You deserved it, you deserved it.” If the warrior decides to retire at this time, he has left an indelible mark in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. Congratulations to both of these great athletes.

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
