The Raw show that gave us the great Rockers reunion, and the SmackDown! that followed it last week seemed to illustrate something. These two programs were really hot due mainly to one person – Marty Jannetty! Think about that for a moment before you argue. Yes, Raw was a pretty good show all the way around, but Jannetty and Shawn Michaels made that show really special. Their reunion was great, the fans loved it, and there was no way the excitement that was created would ebb during the course of the night. Once those in attendance knew what they were going to see, it was all over.
Moving on to last Thursday night, and the real high spot of the evening was the opening match (which rather amazed me with that order, I will admit) the one between Jannetty and Kurt Angle. This was the one that we knew would happen, and we got a good taste of what was to come with his surprise appearance the Monday before. This pairing could have been the main event as far as I was concerned. I was fearful of seeing a very dominate Angle, with Marty being pushed around for most of the match. Was I wrong, and happily, I might add. Jannetty looked absolutely super. He did not need HBK to pick up the slack with regard to allowing him to rest a bit. He went head to head with Kurt and appeared tireless in doing so, even though this match was a rather long one. Yes, Angle won by a tap out using his Ankle Lock, but Jannetty really got to strut his stuff leading up to that point. And while there was obviously more action during the course of the show, the Jannetty / Angle match was by far the best of the night.
This weeks’ Raw didn’t hold a candle to the one previously mentioned, hence my opinion that the Marty Jannetty appearances certainly held a lot of weight. For the most part I found both shows to be rather burdensome to watch. We really weren’t given much more information on Wrestlemania, nor were new matches made. There was a Tag Team contest between Simon Dean, Maven and Molly against Tajiri, William Regal and Christy. There had to be only one reason this took place, and that was to show the ‘strength’ of Christy. I use that very, very loosely. The fact that Christy ultimately was the one to make the cover on Molly to win the match for her team had to be done for only one reason – to show that she is ready to face the Women’s Champion, Trish Stratus. Is this supposed to make us believe she can actually wrestle? Sorry, it didn’t work for this one fan.
I really like what they are doing with Batista’s character right now. As he is showing off his muscular strengths on a weekly basis, he has also been introducing more and more of his personality. He proved his physical prowess as he was victorious in his Lumberjack Match. Much to Triple H’s chagrin, Batista dominated on his way to that win. Of course it remains to be seen whether or not that will be the case at Wrestlemania, but right now we can at least be assured of a good battle.
Earlier on, Batista showed off the sense of humor he has been developing of late. His exchange with Eric Bischoff was really funny. After Eric went on about not knowing anything about the Lumberjack Match, Batista told Bischoff that he would make a good politician, and Eric bit that apple big time. Batista walked off, and just when Eric was seeing himself in office as the Mayor of his small town, he walked back in, saying that he really saw the Raw GM in a different light – that of used car salesman! With a little grin he was gone again, leaving Eric incredulously mouthing those words. I really liked this segment.
Well, a week-and-a-half until Wrestlemania. Some are sick and tired of hearing about it, others can’t get enough. For those of you who just want it to be over, not much longer now, guys.
Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
