Howlings - Divas, Raw and SD, Chyna
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 01/20/2005

Would someone please answer a question for me? Just why did we have a Diva search? OK, better question, why was there a winner? Because it seems that many of the ‘losers’ have already been given a permanent position within the WWE. Divas Joy and Amy, to name but two, make regular appearances each week, and in bad story lines at that. Joy was kidnapped last week and Big Show was determined to find out where she was and who did the deed. He wanted to pulverize the perpetrator, I wanted to thank him. It is beginning to seem as if we have more Divas than active wrestlers at times, which wouldn’t be so bad if they came to the ring as valets or such. But to always have them cat fight or worse, actually try to wrestle, is stupid, and to an extent demeans the hard work that the Trish’s and Lita’s of the company have done for so long. Just one persons opinion.

As I watched Rob Van Dam come down to the ring last Thursday night, complete with the huge immobilizer on his knee, visions of Kobe Bryant came to mind. That’s right, I saw Bryant writhing around on the floor clutching his ankle and moaning. Because after all, he sprained that ankle, and was in so much pain from that injury that he had to be helped off. If you catch some sarcasm here, right on! While I do appreciate the talent of Kobe and realize that with the amount of money he is making, management cannot take chances, I chuckled at just how he reacted to his injury. Going back to RVD, he has suffered in silence (as do most professional wrestlers), and even probable impending surgery did not take him out of the game. True, he did not participate in his tag match, but he did take a good bump and a very well executed stair step shot to the leg, because this is what he, and the others, do. I have found my sympathy for athletes has waned some since I have been watching wrestling. As I have mentioned in the past, those who make their living in the squared circle and professional bull riders have something in common – they are a different breed of cat. They work injured, sometimes seriously so, put off surgery, and frequently come back too soon. But come back they do, and my respect for each and every one of them is great.

Hey, a Championship changed hands at a house show! How cool is that? La Resistance once again are the Tag Team Champs after defeating William Regal. He had a partner, sort of, as The Coach voted himself in to fill the position vacated due to the injury of Eugene. (Another example here, as Eugene finished his match injured.) We all knew the titles would have to change hands, and I for one liked the fact that that this happened at a Winnipeg house show. Attendance for these shows has dropped considerably, and maybe offering some surprises or title changes might bring fans back to the fold, as it were.

I liked Raw this week and for me, it was once again the stronger show between Monday night and SmackDown! on Thursday. Could you believe the choke slam that Kane gave to Trish Stratus? Wow, that was a huge one! Trish is so small that when Kane lifted her up it seemed as if he could throw her into the fans in the upper deck. Big props to her for taking that choke slam like a man, so to speak – gutsy lady.

Going back in time, when Tough Enough was actually a television show – maybe not one of your favorites perhaps, (I liked it) but certainly better than what they gave us this year – Triple H was a guest. I will always remember him saying to the hopeful wrestlers that, to paraphrase, “We tell a story, but we tell a story with our bodies.” I have always felt that he is the best in the business in doing that, whether he is in the middle of a match, or giving a promo. This week he once again had the opportunity to appear worried about Batista, and he did a super job. The insecurity he shows is particularly fun since that is so different from his normal kick ass persona. I am really enjoying the feud between he and Batista, and I am happy that they are slow playing it. That will make the final confrontation so much better, I think.

What a great match Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit gave us. It’s too bad that we had to lose some of it to a commercial break, because these two were hot. The Chris’s have great charisma together and I don’t get tired of watching them go at it. They give the viewers a wrestling lesson every time out. Y2J came out on top this time, but there are never any losers for the fans when these two get to face off.

Finally, I have been reading many things about Joanie “Chyna Doll” Laurer of late, and all I can say is how very sad. One would like to think that when someone moves on from whatever career things will go smoothly for them, and for Laurer it has been nothing of the sort. I feel sorry and embarrassed for her and would not be surprised to hear that she has self-destructed completely. Her actions on the Howard Stern Show and in the strip club give evidence to a tortured soul in need of help. For her sake, I hope she gets it before it’s too late.

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
