Howlings - This and that
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 01/08/2005

Since I am so late this week (due to circumstances beyond my control), I figured I’d just babble about a lot of things, including the upcoming PPV for the WWE, New Years Revolution. On the whole I have been enjoying the weekly shows, particularly Raw. A friend of mine used to be a die-hard viewer, but for quite a while now has not bothered to watch the programs. He said that he gets all the information he needs from reading the internet – not gossip, but just what happened on Raw and SmackDown!.He said he might tune in again, as it sounds as if the shows are improving, especially on Monday night. He’s right, and I hope he does watch. Raw has started to be really strong and fun to see again. I really like how they are handling Batista’s character. I have mentioned this before, but they are doing a super job of putting him over, and while I keep waiting for that turn to happen, I also agree that it is good to hold off on that a while longer. Even so, one can almost taste it, and his recent negative interactions with Triple H have only added to the anticipation of that moment.

We have been treated to a new Lita, and so far I like her. She needed to get tough, that whiny personality just didn’t do it for her. I prefer her the way she is now – ready to rock and roll. The only thing that I don’t quite understand is why it appears that she has now warmed up to Kane. Yeah, I know, it’s entertainment. (Hey, just what am I thinking? This is a company that brought us HLA and Katie Vick, which poor Kane was involved in as well! Why did I ask?) And actually, I guess if I had Gene Snitsky breathing down my neck I’d warm up to Kane, too. At least he appears to be a better protector.

And as long as I mentioned Snitsky, am I the only one who thinks that he and Heidenreich could be interchangeable? I mean, both these big men are high on the heavy breathing list whenever they speak, can snap at the drop of a hat, and neither one has an elevator that goes all the way to the top. I like the looks of Heidenreich better, but that’s just me. Speaking of looks, I missed hearing who Funaki was wrestling this past Thursday, and never recognized Akio with his newly shaved head. It wasn’t until I was reading about the show that I found that out who he was. I did notice that Doug and Danny Basham look alike again. For awhile there one of them was starting to grow a beard, but that kind of thing is impossible as long as they keep doing their changing wrestler act in the middle of a match. Actually, I was glad to see them getting their own identities, but that is apparently gone for the time being.

I just finished watching TNA’s Impact – I still like those shows. Now that I have DVR and am able to program shows to tape without worrying which channel I’m on, I’ll be seeing them more often. Usually I forget to change the channel and end up taping God knows what. Anyway, I enjoyed listening to Christopher Daniels do some play-by-play of sorts, and he did a more than decent job. It was also nice to see Dustin Rhodes, a.k.a. Goldust, wrestle. It had been so long since I had seen him in anything other than his Goldust outfit, and he looked good. I don’t know if TNA will be around long enough to really make an impact (pardon the pun), but I sure hope so. Even though they are not financial competition for the WWE, they are a really good alternative, and their talent is excellent.

New Years Revolution will be upon us tomorrow, and without sounding too optimistic, I think it could be a strong show. Well, most of it. Jerry Lawler will face Mohammed Hassan, and this will be the first match for Hassan. I don’t mind the way they have been giving heat to Mohammed and it could be a good story line. I also understand why he is facing ‘The King’, but to give him credibility he should have a different opponent. Oh well. We go from a short feud to a long one, as Kane faces off against Snitsky. I’ll be interested to see if there is much rust on Kane after his absence, and if Gene shows improvement in this one on one contest.

There will be four titles on the line, one of those being the Women’s Championship. That one will pit Lita against the challenger Trish Stratus. These two women have the ability to put a strong contest together, and I enjoy watching them do their job. With Lita exhibiting that intense attitude that I already mentioned, and Trish always able to deliver when called upon, this could be good watching.

Eugene and William Regal defend their Tag Team belts against Christian and Tyson Tomko. Christian and Tomko have defeated Eugene and Regal on an individual basis, but it’s tag time now, and that could be a different story. Eugene and William have what it takes to make a strong team together, each working well with the other. Christian and Tyson might take the Champs lightly, and that just may be their downfall.

The match for the Intercontinental Championship should be a good one. Shelton Benjamin will defend his belt against Maven. As far as I’m concerned, Maven is the only Tough Enough contestant, never mind winner, who is worth his salt. He has worked hard and it shows, and while he still makes some mistakes he has improved greatly. Benjamin is a talented young wrestler who has a bright future, and these two young studs should put on quite a show for us. I am looking forward to this match, for I expect it to be special.

Finally, the Elimination Chamber Match, and there can’t be six stronger competitors than we will see here. With the World Championship on the line, Edge, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Batista, and Triple H will all have one thing on their mind - walking out of the chamber the Champion. I can’t see this match being anything but excellent, considering the cast of characters involved. Batista will be the last man out of his ‘chamber’, and I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that the last two facing each other will be he and Triple H. The only question will be whether or not Batista lays down for HHH, so that the Cerebral Assassin can once again grab the gold. Regardless, this will be a good one from start to finish, and for this match alone I just might watch the PPV.

If you live in Southern California, let’s get together for boat races. That’s about the only way to get around, we’ve had so much rain here!

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
