Howlings - 5 star SD and Raw; my choices
Posted by Barbara Pinnella on 12/30/2004

Cheers to the WWE for the Christmas in Iraq event they presented to us. The matches we were shown were fun ones, and whether the athletes were happy about making the trip or not, the impression given was one of excitement. In fact, many of those involved said that if the situation was the same next year, they would want to return. What a super show this was, and how cool that the stars were the soldiers themselves, and not the athletes. I’m sure that most of the military would disagree, but the fact remains that the wrestlers took a back seat that day and put the spotlight on others, with positive results.

Interspersed between the matches were clips of several of the troop members with heartwarming well wishes for loved ones back home. We saw the men and women having a chance, for just a short time, to act ‘normal’ and not be all-consumed by the tragedies around them. We watched as they made the venue come alive, and imitated their favorite wrestler along the way. We observed athletes and crew making the long trip overseas, preparing for the flight to camp, and interacting with the troops. We observed Undertaker slap as many hands as he could possibly reach, as he was not Undertaker for a few moments, but an American. And who could forget Lilian Garcia singing our National Anthem as only she can? Or the fact that she and Eddie Guerrero choked up as they gave thanks to those brave men and women doing what they do? Obviously, I loved this show, and there are not enough positive words I can say, so I’ll just leave it at “Thank you, WWE!”

Then we had Raw, and I really liked the show this week, also. I don’t think that I’m in a particularly happy mood, I just think that this Raw hit a home run. What a great idea to have six matches with all of the participants of the Elimination Chamber in the individual matches – if one of those men lost, the winner of that match takes his place in the Chamber match at New Years Revolution. Now, I don’t think that ANYONE believed that would happen, and of course it didn’t. But to have the man who won his match in the fastest time be the last man out, now that added something. Again, it probably was no surprise that the winner in the fastest time was Batista, and that Triple H was pi**ed off, to say the least. But I thought it played out the story line perfectly and really liked the whole thing.

Also, we got to meet our special guest referee for that match, a man Eric Bischoff said that no one would want in that capacity. He was probably right, as HBK Shawn Michaels was introduced. A perfect ending to a really good show. I wasn’t really going to order the PPV this time, but I might just have to do so. The other matches don’t look like much so far, but the Elimination Chamber Match should be a really good one.

OK, for the end of the year, just some of my best and worst choices, in no particular order – having fun here, so don’t take something too personally.

Best character not really being in character – Chris Jericho, WWE

Best character (acting) – Nick Dinsmore (Eugene), WWE.

Best character overall – Still has to be Triple H, WWE – he can do it all.

Biggest flops – Diva search, and this years Tough Enough. TE proved nothing this year, and was bad watching to boot.

Biggest person missed behind the scenes – Paul Heyman, WWE

Entertainer who needs to return – Goldust and Rico, WWE

Worst character at the present time – Simon Dean, WWE

Best body language and expressions – Eddie Guerrero, WWE

Favorite fun PPV – Taboo Tuesday, WWE

Best match – Turning Points’ Six Sides of Steel Cage Match between America’s Most Wanted vs. Elix Skipper and Christopher Daniels, TNA. Special mention for the title match between Brock Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero at No Way Out, WWE.

Best body – Batista and Randy Orton, WWE, and Monty Brown and Daniels, TNA.

Best on mic – Jericho, Mick Foley, WWE, and Raven, BG James, TNA.

Most improved on mic – Orton and Batista, WWE.

Best look for underused wrestler – Luther Reigns, WWE.

Best looking – Jeff Jarrett, he has the most beautiful blue eyes ever! Great cologne too, the one time I met him.

My personal favorites, five from each company – Undertaker, Jericho, Charlie Haas, Guerrero, HBK, WWE, and Daniels, Raven, Jarrett, AJ Styles and James, TNA.

I have not mentioned a lot of things and missed some wrestlers, but this list could go on and on if I didn’t stop here. The main thing here is that I hope you all have a very Happy New Year!!!

Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
