I am writing a short but not so sweet column this week, starting off not with wrestling, but with the basketball fiasco that occurred the other day. Bear with me, this will tie in with sports entertainment, but first let us look at that already infamous game between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons. While I firmly believe that the fans, and I use that word very loosely, involved in the melee should be severely punished, the professional athletes that took part in the fray behaved abominably. These are men that kids look up to, sports heroes who should conduct themselves as such, regardless of how hard that might be. Apparently, NBA Commissioner David Stern felt the same way, as he laid down a myriad of suspensions. Pacers Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season, teammates Stephen Jackson is now gone for 30 games, Jermaine O’Neal will miss 25, and Anthony Johnson is out for five. Detroit does not get off scott free, as Ben Wallace will sit out six games.
The point is, there was a consequence to their actions. Enter Bob Holly. Here is a man who is considered by many in the back to be an ass, plain and simple. He will often work stiff and has a bit of a reputation of hurting people. Remember Matt from Tough Enough? Holly just had to prove he was the better man by blistering that kids’ chest. Only problem was, Matt didn’t back down. Bob might have won the battle of the beatings, but it was Matt who came out looking head and shoulders above Holly. Carlito Caribbean Cool had to have surgery after being thrown out of the ring during a match with Holly. They say it was accidental. At this point, I’m not sure I believe that.
Bob’s latest victim is Rene Dupree. Dupree apparently got a ticket while driving a rental car that was under Holly’s name, and it seems that Bob had to take care of said ticket. Regardless of how much heat Dupree has in the back or with Bob, Holly shouldn’t take things into his own hands in the ring. During a tag match between Holly and Charlie Haas facing Dupree and Kenzo Suzuki the punishment began. By all accounts Holly started shooting on Rene, pounding him, kicking him in the face, and hitting him with a vicious chair shot to his head and neck when Dupree obviously exposed his back to take the hit. In this short period of time, Rene’s eye and face was already very swollen and the eye was almost shut. Holly was sending a message, but at what cost? Dupree finally fled to the back, and I have read nothing as of this writing of anything else that might have happened after that. I will be sure to watch SmackDown! tomorrow night though, as it is apparently obvious that Rene’s eye looks awful.
And the punishment? Holly had to job to Chris Masters in a dark match during the SmackDown! tapings. There also might be a fine, but so what? In a game where it is of the utmost importance to take care of one another in the ring, Holly has seemingly been given free rein to dole out beatings at his whim. Is Holly that important to the company? In my view, he is just the opposite – a huge liability. I don’t know if Rene has any case for a lawsuit, or if that would even be at all feasible. That type of retaliation might just buy him his walking papers. But Bob Holly should not be wrestling dark matches. Bob Holly should not be wrestling any matches. He is a loaded gun that will most certainly go off again, with a chance of even more severe results. Would you want to take that chance? As a wrestler, I would not. As Vince McMahon, I could not afford to, in any sense of the word. No, instead of BEING an ass Bob Holly should be OUT on his!
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Be safe and God Bless,
Barb.
